 FAQs

  • When working with young children I ask that they attend the first part of the first consultation as it is important that a visual assessment can be made. The remaining sessions can be conducted without your child.

  • The terms are often used interchangeably but food allergy and food sensitivity are not the same.

Food allergy is caused by IgE antibodies which can cause immediate and sometimes life-threatening reactions.

Food sensitivity or IgG mediated sensitivity can occur hours or days after a particular food is consumed, making these sensitivities much more difficult to recognise.

  • The test options include IgE and IgG testing from Genova Diagnostics. Further information in relation to the test is available on patient resources. Food Sensitivity Test Information

  • The viability and utility of food sensitivity testing divides opinion and is currently only available via private laboratories. The gold standard for establishing food sensitivity is food elimination diet.

There is debate around the exact mechanism of how foods trigger food sensitivity. A common view is that food sensitivities are caused by a compromised gut wall, referred to as intestinal permeability where an immune response occurs as a result of proteins leaking through the gut wall. This immune response may lead to the production of IgG antibodies to foods.

IgG (food sensitivity testing) is designed to detect the presence of IgG antibodies to particular food proteins.

Conducting food sensitivity testing as part of a focused programme including elimination diet can be a valuable addition to the approach, helping with motivation and providing a structured starting point. Food elimination diets based on IgG testing have been found to improve outcomes by 25% more than elimination diets alone.

  • Yes. Testing is not essential and is not appropriate for everyone. The gold standard for establishing food sensitivity is food elimination diet which is a key part of the programme. This can be conducted without the need for testing.

  • Testing is not available for children under the age of 2 due to their immature immune system.

Diet in pre-school children also tends to be more managed with limited variety of foods. Therefore, focus on diet assessment and pausing potential trigger foods is a more appropriate approach without the need for testing.

  • Food elimination is where a food that is suspected to cause symptoms is withdrawn temporarily. These foods are then reintroduced at a later stage. It is important that food elimination is managed correctly to ensure nutrition and energy requirements are maintained.

  • Yes. I offer staged payment plans where you can pay for sessions on a monthly basis.
